Summary:

History: Maka Albarn is the daughter of Spirit Albarn and his unnamed meister partner. Due to her father’s incessant cheating on her mother, the two eventually divorced, though Spirit still claims to “love Maka and Mama the most.” Maka is a student at Shibusen Academy or the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA), and is one of the top students there, both in academics and skill level. She and her partner Soul had already collected the necessary 99 pre-kishin souls that a meister and weapon team require to upgrade the weapon into a death scythe, and were working on collecting their last soul (one belonging to a witch) when they made a mistake, and were forced to start all the way from the beginning again with zero souls.

After losing all of their souls she and her partner immediately started over in their search of 99 evil souls, though their attempts were interrupted when they met and fought with the insane meister Crona, a meister whom the witch Medusa experimented on. The failed result of this fight leaves Maka with more determination to become a better meister, but also causes a reaction in her partner when Soul becomes infected by what is called "black blood." When they are in resonance the black blood has the power to make Maka stronger, but also to drag both she and her partner into insanity.

Eventually they meet their goal of acquiring 99 souls, and also defeat the witch Arachne, effectively allowing Maka to achieve her goal of turning Soul into a Death Scythe. Shortly before Soul is made into a Death scythe, the witch Medusa reawakens a centuries old demon named Asura who wishes to drown the world in madness. Alongside her classmates, friends, and teachers, Maka battles against Asura’s followers as well as others who oppose the DWMA. Between the lot of them, and with Crona’s help, they are able to defeat Asura, particularly with the use of Maka’s anti-insanity wavelength.

After the battle is over the DWMA begins to go back to normal, however the new Death God makes a few very significant changes to the code they live by, including first and foremost no longer viewing witches as enemies but rather as comrades, ending a near millenium long feud. He also does away with the Death Scythe system, claiming Maka’s Death Scythe Soul as the last Death Scythe since they are hoping for a new era in which Death Scythes are no longer a necessity.

Personality: The first word that comes to mind when describing Maka is driven. Maka Albarn is nothing if driven to accomplish her goals and protect the people she cares about. She is confident in battle and in school, and always striving to do her best even at the cost of her own well being. Maka is at the top of her class in school and very focused academically, the other characters often teasing her about being a bookworm or nerd.

Despite some introverted qualities, Maka enjoys spending time with her friends, often hanging out or just relaxing with them. She is a relatively easy going person as long as no one is pressing her buttons (As Soul or Black Star often do on purpose). Maka very much enjoys being around people, and has been seen to get very excited over parties and dancing. She has a large group of friends who she is unwaveringly loyal to, and she’s not afraid to tease or joke around with them good naturedly. She’s also not afraid to put her friends in their place when she thinks they’re out of line.

Despite being very confident on the outside, there have been moments when a more insecure Maka has surfaced as well, revealing her feelings of inadequacy towards her friends and fellow meisters. Of the three main meisters, Maka is undoubtedly the weakest, and at times this wears her down. Rather than letting these feelings get her down however, instead Maka uses them to push her forward into a sometimes almost obsessive determination to become stronger. Maka is ridiculously stubborn, and in tougher battles, she sometimes gets too focused on beating her opponent and forgets to worry about her own safety. Her recklessness increases when she becomes angry or faces an opponent who she has a personal vendetta against.

Maka’s stubbornness can often lead to arguments between she and her friends, and namely her partner, Soul. When arguing with him, she has been seen to be bratty, childish, and immature, though after taking the time to calm down, the reader is able to see that she feels guilty for her childish behavior and knows that it was wrong. Her pride and stubborn behavior cause issues for her, but eventually Maka’s maturity usually comes through and she bends her pride to apologize for what she’s done or said.

Powers: Soul Perception- This is something of a 6th sense that allows Maka to view a person’s soul. By glancing at a soul she can get the basic personality traits of the person she is looking at. She can also see moods shifts in a soul such as a person becoming agitated or afraid. The ability allows her to locate people from far distances, their souls acting as a beacon that she can follow or warning her of an approaching soul. Although soul perception is something she can focus on to get a stronger impression, the ability is at least somewhat passive, always on in the back of her awareness. An example is when a witch approaches her home city, and Maka is relaxing in her apartment with friends. Despite being completely focused on her friends and not in the process of activating soul perception, the soul is strong enough to catch her attention and cause her to leave the apartment. It is hinted that Maka’s soul perception is among the strongest in their world.

Wielding a weapon/soul resonance- (NA without her partner) The ability to wield a living weapon, or a person who turns into a weapon. In her case, Maka’s weapon partner is Soul who takes Scythe form, and the scythe is her preferred weapon.

Soul Adagio- (NA without her partner) An attack in which Soul nullifies the soul wavelength of an enemy and freezes them in place while giving Maka the time to finish them off.

Flight-(NA without her partner) Soul can grow wings in his weapon form and Maka can use him to fly.

Capable fighter-Part of Maka’s job is combat and though she prefers (as most meisters do) weapon combat, she is skilled in hand to hand. Flexibility, endurance, strength and the ability to hold her own in a fight are things she works very hard at.

As a side note, all of Maka’s supernatural abilities aside from soul perception are null and void in a setting without her partner so I did not modify them here.
